After a week of hard practices, 8-year-old Imperial Valley Flipz All-Stars cheerleader Azi Garcia was able to win her individual division competition at the American Showcase on Friday in Anaheim.
“To get ready for the competition I worked hard at practice and put a lot of work into my routine,” Garcia said. “When I got there I was really excited to see all the competition. I was nervous but I had a strong feeling that I was going to be able to win.”Garcia won the 7-to-9-year-old, level 4, division in the American Showcase competition.“I was excited the whole time and when I finished my routine I was happy with the way it went and I felt confident,” Garcia said. “Winning was a real rewarding experience for me and I was just happy.”
Garcia was able to perform well enough to get some strong comments from her judges.
“After her performance the judges had said that it was awesome and everything she scored was above average,” I.V. Flipz trainer Karie Ferriera said. “We worked hard and did extremely well.”
Garcia has been cheerleading for three years and it has become her favorite sport in just a short time.
“I love cheerleading. I have been doing it for three years now and I just like all the dancing, tumbling and being a flyer,” Garcia said. “I have a lot of friends on the team and I just like everything.”
For the past two years Garcia has got to work with Ferriera and her coach as seen the growth.“In those two years she has grown tremendously,” Ferriera said. “She’s extremely dedicated to the sport and she’s always here five days a week. She has the dedication and natural talent to be good.”
